F1 burst back onto the scene last weekend, with an action-packed Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, making up for the disastrous new qualifying format that debuted one day earlier. Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton bounced back from poor first laps to claim a Mercedes one-two, with Sebastian Vettel in third.

The 2016 season opener at the Albert Park Circuit was also the first race for the new tyre regulations, with Pirelli nominating the medium, soft and super-soft compounds. It sparked plenty of interesting strategy options during the race. Here are some of the main themes and stories:

Vettel loses win after strategy error

Vettel stormed into the lead after a stunning launch from the grid, holding a clear advantage in the opening third of the race. He was on the super-soft tyre for the opening two stints, pitting on lap 12 for a new set. However, the red flag came out on lap 18 after Fernando Alonsoai??i??s huge crash, following contact with Esteban Gutierrez.

This is where Vettelai??i??s chances of victory crumbled. Ferrari opted for another set of the super-soft tyre and completed a long third stint, before switching to the softs for the final part of the Australian Grand Prix. But Mercedes went for the more durable medium compound and it proved to be the way to go, with both drivers moving ahead of Vettel when he stopped and going right to the end.

Ferrari went for the wrong strategy and paid the price, Vettel showed good pace on the softer compounds late in the race but it wasnai??i??t enough to fight back and a mistake with a handful of laps to go dropped him back from Hamilton. He eventually settled for third.

Ricciardoai??i??s strategy costs him time

Daniel Ricciardo did a good job to rise from eighth on the grid to fourth by the finish, impressing on home soil with some strong overtakes and pace. However, Red Bullai??i??s strategy decision failed to pay off and this prevented him from gaining any more ground.

The Australian started on the super-soft and, like Vettel, stopped again before the red flag appeared. In a reverse to his former team-mate, Ricciardo went onto the soft tyre compound after the stoppage and was running second when he stopped for the super-soft.

While it meant he was on a quick tyre for the final stint, the additional trip to the pits meant he was unable to properly take advantage of the position he was in at the red flag. But, all in all, it seems likely that had he gone to the medium tyre, fourth would have been the maximum result anyway due to the pace of Ferrari and Mercedes.

Haas benefits from red flag

Romain Grosjean secured a brilliant sixth place for the Haas F1 team on its debut, the best result for an all-new team since Toyotaai??i??s Mika Salo finished in the same position at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix. The Frenchman put in a good drive and Haas made the right call on tyres, meaning Grosjean didnai??i??t actually complete a normal pit stop all race.

He started on the soft tyre, putting in a long first stint before the red flags emerged. Haas opted to put Grosjean on the mediums for the rest of the race and he managed to go all the way to the end, a stunning 39-lap stint. He defended well from Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas, moving up the order as other drivers pitted to finish sixth.

K-Mag bounces back

Kevin Magnussenai??i??s return to F1 with Renault got off to the worst possible start with a puncture on the opening lap of the Australian Grand Prix. The tyre failed at Turn 2 and he lost a considerable amount of time limping back to the pits, as well as producing plenty of sparks.

He started on the super-softs but the early stop saw him switch to the mediums. He went one lap down but pitted just before the red flag for another set of the hardest tyre compound. The stoppage saw him move back onto the lead lap, which revolutionised his race and brought him back into contention.

The Danish driver put in an impressive 41-lap stint on the mediums, making some good moves and making gradual progress up the order, eventually finishing in 12th, just behind his rookie team-mate Jolyon Palmer. It was an underrated drive, with most of the focus at Renault going to Palmer.

New rules boost tyre strategies

So, overall, the new tyre regulations meant we saw a range of different strategies up and down the grid. From not even completing an actual pit stop due to the red flag, to starting on the super-soft and going long on the mediums, or splitting up the final part of the race. It was good to see all three nominated compounds used in a variety of ways.

It was just a shame tyre limitations also contributed to the disastrous qualifying on Saturday. But we should see much more strategy from the tyre rules this season and thatai??i??s an exciting thing, because ai??i?? as we saw in Australia ai??i?? it helped produce some exciting racing.

Vettel perde a lideranAi??a apA?s erro estratAi??gico

A escolha estratAi??gica equivocada custou caro.
