Corridas eletrizantes e cheias de ação já viraram a cara de 2016. O GP da China não fugiu a regra e proporcionou muito drama e emoção, com o novo regulamento de pneus se mostrando efetivo novamente.

Diversos incidentes, inúmeras estratégias e um grid muito misturado em grande parte da prova ditaram o ritmo do domingo. Nico Rosberg venceu novamente, se juntando a Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel e Alberto Ascari no seleto grupo de pilotos com seis vitórias consecutivas.

Rosberg lucra em uma estratégia alternativa

O vencedor da prova optou por uma estratégia bem diferente, a qual começou a ser executada ainda no sábado. Rosberg fechou o Q2 na 3ª posição com os pneus macios, se classificando sem sustos para a parte final do Quali. Como os pilotos que passam para o Q3 largam com os pneus utilizados na etapa anterior, o alemão chegou ao grid com o pneus amarelos no domingo.

A Mercedes já apresentava um bom ritmo com os macios durante os treinos livres, além disso, o traçado que proporciona um índice alto de degradação tornava os macios muito mais fortes que os super macios devido a velocidade e durabilidade. Se apoiando nos pneus amarelos, Rosberg parou apenas duas vezes durante o GP, permanecendo na pista durante o carro de segurança, trocando para outro set de macios e terminando a prova nos médios.

A estratégia funcionou perfeitamente e sua pilotagem equilibrada rendeu acachapantes 40 segundos de diferença para o 2º colocado no fim da prova, certamente aliviando a pressão da equipe durante o Gp e evitando desgastes de pneu extras para o alemão.

Médios usados com frequência

Após uma performance duvidosa no Bahrein, os pneus médios foram usados com muita frequência na China, graças a durabilidade do composto no circuito de Shanghai. Muitas equipes sofreram com alto desgastes durante os treinos livres, o que praticamente inutilizou os super macios nessas condições de pista.

Os macios e médios foram os viram mais ação no Domingo. Era esperado que os pneus amarelos fossem usados com mais frequência e a teoria se comprovou durante a prova, já que vimos muitos stints menores com este composto. Entretanto, os médios também receberam sua parcela de atenção perto do fim da corrida, alguns pilotos com Ericsson e Alonso, até usaram dois sets de pneus médios.

Três paradas foram a estratégia ideal

No total, 15 pilotos completaram três paradas no GP da China, sendo a estratégia mais utilizada devido ao alto índice de desgaste de pneus no circuito, abrindo o leque de opções para o uso de diferentes compostos. A estratégia mais comum foi largar com Super macios, partir para dois stints de macios e terminar a prova com médios.

Mesmo assim, diversas estratégias diferentes foram usadas. Rosberg conseguiu parar apenas duas vezes largando com os macios e permanecendo na pista durante o carro de segurança. Boa parte do pelotão parou durante o Safety Car logo após os incidentes da primeira volta, gerando um pitlane bem movimentado, ainda sim, alguns pilotos ficaram na pista e conseguiram fazer uma estratégia de apenas duas paradas funcionar.

Caos nas primeiras voltas gera mais paradas

Muitos pilotos foram forçados a fazer mais paradas que o planejado devido ao caos nas primeiras voltas do Gp. Já na longa primeira curva, Vettel e Kimi colidiram e o finlandês rodou em direção a RBR de Daniil Kvyat, causando um dano na asa dianteira da Ferrari. Raikkonen parou no fim da volta 1, assim como Grosjean e Felipe Nasr, ambos com problemas na asa dianteira.

Hamilton largou em ultimo, vítima de um problema no ERS durante o Quali, e foi atingido por Nasr na primeira curva, também perdendo a asa dianteira e sendo forçado a parar no fim da primeira volta. O britânico ainda parou duas vezes durante o carro de segurança para se livrar dos super macios. Nico Hulkenberg ainda foi punido e teve que pagar um drivethrough, comprometendo completamente sua corrida.

A mudança da regra de pneus, entregando três compostos por GP, colaborou para corridas eletrizantes no início dessa temporada. Pilotos batalhando fora de posição e com compostos diferentes. A maior parte do grid tem conseguido guardar pelo menos um set de cada pneu para o domingo, aumentando a variedade de estratégias e alternativas. Isso também aumenta a possibilidade de erros, como por exemplo a tentativa de apenas duas paradas da McLaren com Jenson Button, o britânico não conseguiu levar o seu útimo set de médios até o final e foi obrigado a parar novamente.

Corridas de recuperação muito efetivas

Após tantos incidentes e problemas na primeira volta, fomos presenteados com corridas de recuperação incríveis. Vettel caiu para oitavo devido ao incidente na primeira curva mas o ritmo intenso da Ferrari e uma estratégia de três paradas muito bem executada o colocando em um sólido segundo lugar.

Daniel Ricciardo sofreu um furo de pneu enquanto liderava a prova na volta 3. Sua 2ª posição no Quali provou que o RB12 tinha ritmo de prova e isso ficou ainda mais evidente enquanto o australiano fatiava rapidamente o pelotão. Também parando três vezes, foi agressivo durante praticamente toda a corrida, terminando em uma merecida 4ª colocação.

Kimi Raikkonen foi obrigado a parar na primeira volta para reparar sua danificada Ferrari e ainda aproveitou a ocasião para colocar os pneus amarelos. Um longo stint nos pneus médios ajudou o finlandês a superar pilotos mais lentos enquanto calçava o composto mais resistente, completando apenas três paradas, ao contrário de Hamilton.

Kimi e Lewis chegaram a correr juntos após as confusões da primeira volta. No entanto, o britânico parou 5 vezes, duas sob safety car, completando alguns stints menores com os pneus amarelos. O atual campeão optou por terminar a corrida com os médios mas o longo stint fez com que sua corrida de recuperação terminasse mais cedo. Hamilon cruzou a linha de chegada em 7º, duas posições atrás de Kimi.

It’s becoming a trend, isn’t it? Being treated to these exciting, action-packed 2016 F1 races. The Chinese Grand Prix was full of drama and talking points, with the new tyre regulations for the season continuing to produce plenty of strategy.

We saw plenty of incidents, a wide range of strategy choices and a mixed up order for the majority of the Chinese GP. It was another great race, won by Nico Rosberg, who joins a rather exclusive club after winning his sixth consecutive race – something only Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Alberto Ascari have also done. Here are the main strategy stories from round three of the 2016 season:

Rosberg does something different

The race winner went for a very different strategy, which was all set up during qualifying. Rosberg was third fastest on the soft Pirelli tyre in Q2, easily making it through to the top 10 shoot-out. With drivers in Q3 starting on the tyres they completed their fastest lap on in the second segment, Rosberg lined up on the grid on the yellow-marked soft compound.

The Mercedes had ran well on the soft tyre in practice and high tyre degradation meant the mid-range tyre from the nominations was far stronger than the super-soft, with good speed and durability. That meant Rosberg was able to pit just twice, staying out during the safety car, before taking another set of softs and ending the race on the mediums.

It worked well and his controlled drive meant he was able to finish almost 40 seconds clear of his nearest challenger, which certainly took the pressure off Mercedes and meant Rosberg was able to keep his tyres in good shape.

Medium frequently used

The medium Pirelli tyre was widely used during the Chinese GP, thanks to its durability at the Shanghai International Circuit. Teams suffered high tyre degradation during practice and that meant the super-soft compound was ill-suited to the track and conditions.

The soft and medium tyres were used far more frequently. The former was expected to be the most popular and that proved to be the case, with a lot of shorter stints, but the white-marked medium got a fair amount of use as some drivers went for long final parts of the race on the hardest compound. A few drivers, like Marcus Ericsson and Fernando Alonso, even used it for two stints.

Three-stop the way to go

In total, 15 drivers completed three pit stops during the Chinese GP. It was the most frequently used strategy due to the high tyre degradation at the Shanghai track and this opened up a lot of options for compound use. The most common were starting on the super-softs, then completing two soft-tyre stints and then ending the race on the medium compound.

But there were a lot of different variations. Rosberg was able to go a different route and stop twice due to starting on the softs and staying out during the safety car. Most of the field actually pitted during the brief pause for the first lap incidents, causing a very busy pitlane, but the few that did stay out managed to make it on only two stops.

Early chaos prompts more stops

Several drivers had to stop more times than they anticipated due to early incidents and problems. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen collided and the Finnish driver spun into Daniil Kvyat’s Red Bull, causing him to lose his nose. The Ferrari pitted at the end of lap one, as did Romain Grosjean and Felipe Nasr, who also picked up damage.

Lewis Hamilton started from the back after an ERS issue in qualifying and he was hit by Nasr at Turn 1, causing him to also follow them in. He also stopped twice under the safety car to get the super-soft compound out of the way. Nico Hulkenberg had to drive through the pits after a penalty which complicated his strategy.

The new Pirelli rules with three tyre compounds nominated has produced some great racing. Drivers battle while out of position and on different Pirelli tyres. Most of them have all three compounds available for the race which sparks plenty of strategy options. It’s great for us, but some teams get things wrong. McLaren tried a two-stop with Jenson Button but he couldn’t make two final stints on the medium compound work and had to pit again for the super-softs.

Recovery drives, how’d they do it?

We saw some amazing recovery performances during the Chinese GP after incidents and problems. Vettel dropped to eighth after the opening lap chaos but the Ferrari’s pace and a strong three-stop strategy with two stints on the super-soft helped him move up to second place.

Daniel Ricciardo picked up a puncture while leading on lap three. His second place in qualifying proved the RB12 had pace and he was able to move rapidly up the field with a three-stop race, with two stints on the soft tyre. It was an aggressive drive but he did well to rise up to fourth by the flag.

Raikkonen stopped on lap one for repairs and went onto the soft compound. A long stint on the hard tyre helped him displace slower cars while still being on the most durable compound and helped him to stop just three times, unlike Hamilton.

The two ran together for a while after their early woes. Hamilton stopped five times in total, twice under the safety car, and completed several short stints on the soft compound. He went onto the medium tyre for the final part of the race but the long stint caused his recovery to lose spark late on. He finished seventh, two spots behind Raikkonen.

Após uma abertura de temporada brilhante na Austrália, o espetáculo continuou na segunda etapa do ano, dessa vez no deserto do Bahrein. Muitas ultrapassagens, diversas estratégias diferentes, batalhas e colisões foram alguns dos ingredientes de outro incrível GP em 2016.

Mercedes divide estratégias

Mesmo dividindo a primeira fila, os pilotos da Mercedes se encontravam em posições bem distintas após a primeira volta. Rosberg liderava com folga enquanto Hamilton sofria com as consequência do contato com Valtteri Bottas ainda na curva 1. O inglês caiu para nono mas imediatamente começou a fatiar o grid em busca da liderança.

A equipe foi conservadora na escolha da estratégia de Nico, largando com Super macios, parando para macios na volta 13, colocando um set usado de super macios na volta 30 e enfim voltando para os macios na volta 39 para o último stint.

Essa estratégia espelhou a usada pela Ferrari com Raikkonen, cobrindo a ameaça moderada do finlandês em busca da vitória. Entretanto, a equipe decidiu usar algo diferente com Lewis para ajudá-lo a navegar o grid com mais facilidade. Não é comum a Mercedes dividir estratégias dessa forma.

Mesmo com o dano no carro, Hamilton não parou até a volta 13, saindo de super macios para médios em busca de um longo segundo stint, o que o ajudou a se livrar de carros mais lentos. Mesmo caindo para 6º após o pit-stop, o inglês estava novamente no pódio quando parou para super macios usados na volta 28, fazendo sua última troca na volta 41, dessa vez para macios.

A estratégia não foi convencional, mas é bem provável que Hamilton também terminaria em 3º com a estratégia de Nico Rosberg, mesmo com o carro danificado, provando que Mercedes e Ferrari ainda estão consideravelmente a frente do pelotão.

Grosjean adorando os super macios

A Haas acertou na estratégia mais uma vez, impulsionando Romain Grosjean para quinto, uma posição acima do seu grande resultado na Austrália. O francês foi novamente a única Haas a cruzar a linha de chegada e o fez de maneira espetacular, usando três sets de super macios para completar lindas ultrapassagens e escalar o pelotão.

O francês largou em 9º, tendo o benefício de ser o primeiro piloto com a escolha livre de pneus. Optando por largar com novos super macios, saiu da primeira curva em 6º mesmo em meio ao caos. Acabou parando um pouco mais cedo que seus competidores, realizando a primeira troca para os mesmos pneus vermelhos na volta 11 e a segunda, para super macios usados, na volta 27.

Três stints do composto mais rápido significaram que tivemos um Grosjean altamente competitivo e ousado enquanto fatiava o pelotão. As escolhas diferentes de pneus proporcionaram ótimas disputas por conta de pilotos fora de posição com compostos diferentes e as brigas do francês foram evidencias claras disso. Sua ultima troca na volta 40, dessa vez para os macios o colocaram em 5º, posição na qual terminou a prova.

Williams escolhe os médios

Ao contrário da maioria do grid, a Williams optou por utilizar os compostos médios em grande parte da corrida, no entanto, a decisão arriscada não trouxe lucros. Massa e Bottas assumiram a 2ª e a 3ª posição logo na primeira volta, porém a mudança para o composto mais lento teve um impacto decisivo no resultado final.

Massa parou na volta 7 enquanto Bottas foi para os pits na volta seguinte, além do drive-through que o finlandês pagou na volta 9 graças ao incidente com Hamilton. O brasileiro teve dificuldades com os pneus médios, ainda sim, a estratégia de duas paradas foi mantida. Massa voltou a parar para os pneus brancos na volta 29, já Bottas realizou seu último pit-stop na 34.

As altas temperaturas de pista favoreceram as estratégias mais agressivas nos compostos mais macios, caminho esse que não foi escolhido pelos britânicos, optando por longos stints nos médios. Massa terminou em 8º e Bottas em 9º, obviamente atrapalhado pelos danos da colisão na curva 1.

Red Bull com alto desgaste

A RBR apresentou uma certa dificuldade com o desgaste de pneus no deserto, com Daniel Ricciardo em apuros na parte final de seus stints. A equipe conseguiu reagir a tempo e lucrou com suas escolhas, colocando o australiano em uma incrível e solitária 4ª posição.

Ricciardo parou ainda na votla 6 para os macios, se encaminhando para novos pneus amarelos na volta 24 e terminando com os médios após a volta 42. A escolha do útlmo stint poderia ser questionada, uma vez que optar pelos pneus amarelos poderia ter contribuído para diminuir a diferença entre Ricciardo e Kimi.

Entretanto, o australiano tinha apenas dois sets de macios e um de médios disponíveis no Domingo, limitando as escolhas da Red Bull no aspecto estratégico. No fim das contas, Ricciardo terminou em um distante 4º lugar e muito provavelmente terminaria na mesma posição mesmo com uma escolha distinta. Já Daniil Kvyat completou dois longos stints com o pneu amarelo antes de partir para dois stints com super macios, contribuindo para evitar alto desgaste de pneus e se recuperar de um sábado desastroso no Quali. O russo terminou em 7º.

F1’s dramatic and exciting on-track action continued at the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix. We were treated to another frantic race, with plenty of overtakes, battles and collisions. Nico Rosberg took victory for Mercedes.

Kimi Raikkonen finished in the runner-up spot, with Lewis Hamilton bouncing back from a disastrous start to take the final podium. The new-for-2016 tyre regulations threw up plenty of strategy options, here are some of the main headlines from the Bahrain GP:

Mercedes splits strategy

The two Mercedes drivers found themselves in very different positions after the first lap. Rosberg was out front with a clear lead, while Hamilton suffered contact with Valtteri Bottas at Turn 1. He dropped to as low as ninth on the opening tour of the Bahrain International Circuit but quickly made up places.

The current constructors’ champions played it safe with Rosberg, starting on the super-softs, switching to new softs on lap 13, moving onto a scrubbed set of the softest tyre compound on lap 30 and then switching back to a new set of softs for the final stint on lap 39.

The strategy mirrored the one used by Ferrari with Raikkonen, with Mercedes covering off the mild threat of the Finnish driver. But the team opted to try something different with Hamilton to help him make progress up the order following his poor start. We don’t often seen Mercedes splitting its strategy like this.

Despite the damage his car suffered, Hamilton didn’t pit until lap 13. He went onto a set of medium tyres for a longer second stint, which helped him move past slower cars. Having dropped to sixth after his stop, he soon found himself back in a podium spot. He moved back to scrubbed super-softs on lap 28 and finally switched to the softs on lap 41, a later stop than most.

The strategy was unconventional, but it is likely that Hamilton would have moved up to third place anyway even with the same strategy as Rosberg, even with the damage to his car. The Mercedes and Ferrari remain some way ahead of the chasing pack.

Grosjean likes the super-softs

Haas once again got its strategy right, which boosted Romain Grosjean to fifth place – going one better than Australia. The Frenchman was once again the sole Haas driver to reach the finish and he did so in spectacular style, using three sets of super-softs to complete some stunning overtakes and move up the order.

He lined up in ninth place, the first driver to get free choice of tyre. Haas went for new super-softs and he exited the final corner on the first lap in sixth place. He pitted earlier than most around him on lap 11 for another new set of super-softs, before switching to a used set on lap 27.

These stints on the fastest Pirelli compound meant we saw a feisty and racy Grosjean as he moved up the order. The differing strategies produced great racing due to drivers being out of position and on different compounds, and Grosjean’s battles were clear evidence of this. His final stint on the soft tyre, which he moved onto on lap 40, saw him move up to fifth, which is where he finished.

Williams choose the mediums

Unlike most, Williams opted to use the medium tyre more than other teams during the Bahrain Grand Prix but the decision failed to pay off. Felipe Massa and Bottas ran second and third early on, despite the latter’s contact with Hamilton, but switching early to the mediums had a big impact on the team’s end position.

Massa stopped on lap seven, while Bottas pitted on lap eight and then had a drive-through, which he served on the next lap. Massa struggled on the mediums but Williams continued with a two-stop strategy. The Brazilian pitted for the final time on lap 29 for another set of the hardest tyre brought to Bahrain, while Bottas stopped for softs on lap 34.

The track temperatures favoured a more aggressive strategy on the softer tyre compounds but Williams didn’t go down that route, instead going for longer stints on the harder Pirelli rubber. It backfired and Massa finished eighth, with Bottas down in ninth, not helped by the damage he sustained on lap one.

Red Bull suffer higher deg

Red Bull Racing looked to struggle more with higher tyre degradation in Bahrain, with Daniel Ricciardo often struggling at the end of his stints before diving into the pits. The team reacted quickly to this and the strategy eventually paid off, with Ricciardo finishing a rather lonely fourth.

He stopped very early on lap six for the soft tyre, before fitting a new set on lap 24 and going for the medium tyre on lap 42. It could be argued running the harder compound in the third stint would have been more beneficial to his race, or running a third soft tyre in the shorter final stint could have helped him cut the gap to those ahead of him.

But Ricciardo only had two sets of soft tyres available for the race and one set of mediums, which restricted Red Bull in its strategy decisions. In the end though, he was a distant fourth and would have likely finished in the same position even with a tweak in strategy. Meanwhile Daniil Kvyat completed two longer stints on the softs early on before two shorter final stints on the super-softs, which helped him move up the order from a poor grid position and avoid the higher tyre degradation. He finished seventh.
